The Art of Creating Function and Decor in Your Bedroom and Bath

Our bedrooms and bathrooms are the spaces where we begin and end each day of our lives, so personal comfort and quiet relaxation should reign supreme when decorating or remodeling these special rooms of our homes. If outdated furniture and fixtures or clutter and disorganization are the first and last things we encounter in our routines, then its little wonder many of us fail to get a good night's sleep and then go about our daily lives in a stressed out mood.

When considering a bathroom upgrade or a new look to your bedroom think about the time you spend there. Then, create a look and feel that appeals to your taste and personal needs. These personal spaces should give you a warm, satisfying experience every time you use them.

For most home owners, budget and room size matter almost as much as personal tastes when planning bed and bath upgrades. However, with some creative designing and thoughtful buying anyone can achieve the comfort, serenity and luxury they desire.  In some cases a bedroom upgrade may be as simple as a new down comforter, sheet sets, a throw rug, or window and wall treatments.  For others a complete makeover from floor to ceiling with all new furnishings and accessories may be the order of the day. If the latter fits your needs, we strongly recommend employing an experienced decorator or using the design personnel and virtual designing aids available at the major home improvement stores.

Consider also your personal safety and that of your guests in regard to bathroom fixtures. Remember, you'll most likely be living a long time with the changeover you create now. Think functionality. Easy tub and shower access, strategically placed grab bars, anti-slip tubs, convenient sink and plumbing fixtures, and adequate storage areas should all be priorities. If handicapped persons or elderly parents live with you, then consider one of the walk-in tub models now available at all home improvement and plumbing stores.

Decor should always be a matter of one's personal tastes as well as fit the general theme of the rest of the home and house style.  To some, feng shui, modern or minimalist may be their calling or the "best fit" to the architecture of their house. To others an antique, retro or traditional look may be preferred.  Most importantly, always go with the theme concept that registers high on your own feels-good-meter and stay away from the latest trendy styles. Trends come and go and they are never a good idea in room decor.

Bedroom Stressors: Clutter, Messes and Odors

How do you feel when you wake up in the morning?  Are you revitalized and ready to tackle the world or do you wake feeling groggy, achy, tense, and out of sync?

Your bedroom ambience affects how well you sleep and your preparation for the next day. Restless sleep isn't just about the type of bed and mattress you sleep on, it's also about the different stressors in your bedroom which can cause poor sleep habits, loss of vigor and a general moodiness.

Clutter, mess and the off-odors they generate create a chaotic ambience causing sleep loss and morning tension. Having clutter doesn't necessarily mean a person is a hoarder, although accumulating too much of it could lead to such behavior, it simply means one has unneeded stuff taking up space, collecting dust and invoking some degree of nightime angst. Clutter could just be that attention starved potted plant in the corner or childhood collections like stuffed bears and dolls that have taken over the furniture.

Messy bedrooms are a major stressor. Buying the finest bed and best mattress won't give you the sleep you need if the room ambience is bad. Clothes, shoes, towels, and jewelry carelessly strewn about are a constant reminder that you're behind on house chores. Unorganized paper items like store receipts, bills, cards and letters piling up on the dresser will cause fitful sleep when they're the last thing noticed at bedtime. Unkempt bedrooms generate sleep depriving smells as mildew and bacteria flourish in those unwashed clothes and towels and as dust collects on the clutter. De-cluttering and maintaining the bedroom is the first step to enjoying and benefitting from sound, restful sleep. Consider these steps to improve your sleep:

Minimalize the furnishings - out with the old and worn then limit anything new to functional and pleasing. "Less is more" is the mantra of minimalist decorators and it is especially important in creating a sense of space and comfort in the bedroom.

Discover Feng Shui - Simple technics like using an electric diffuser for a pleasing aroma; placing a small aesthetic water fountain to create soft, sleep enhancing sounds; getting rid of wall clutter like portraits and shelves; repainting in soft or neutral colors; replace glaring light fixtures with soft lighting; replacing worn bedding with warm, comfy bedding sets.

Enhancing your rest and sleep with Feng Shui should also include creating a focal point in the room. This should be something that is of special importance to you and that gives you a feeling of safety and serenity. For some this may be an icon of some form befitting their personal beliefs and for others it may be a secular object or certain colors representing the primary Feng Shui elements of life: earth, air, energy, and water.

Restful, rejuvenating sleep is just as important to one's physical and mental well being as getting proper exercise and nourishment. De-cluttering the bedroom is key to getting the quality sleep you need. Check out the books from Amazon.com. below  to learn more about Feng Shui and de-cluttering,

Bath Accessories For Function and Decor

Accessorizing the bathroom is always a matter of personal style, convenience, form, and function. Without the convenience and form of modern bath accessories our days would not get off to a good start during our morning rush. Without function we cannot safely clean and groom ourselves and, without a touch of our personal taste, we couldn't enjoy that evening bath or shower experience that relaxes us at the end of the day.

Factoring in the above four points will help you decide what's right for your bath when shopping for accessories. Even something as seemingly mundane as a toothbrush holder should be aesthetically pleasing to the eye and work with the decor theme of the room. Afterall, we look at and use that holder at least twice a day everyday!

Today's online stores offer a vast array of choices in plumbing fixtures, sinks and showers, bathroom gadgets, and bath decor.  Plumbing fixtures, tissue, towel and robe holders, sinks, tubs, showers, and toilets have all advanced from simple form and function to celebrity designer status. Beautiful fixtures should be the design anchor in a modern, comfortable bathroom. If you are planning a new bathroom or rehab bathroom project, carefully consider the style of fixtures best suited to your tastes and needs, then accessorize around them.

Upgrade Your Bathroom Without Breaking The Bank

Your bathroom upgrade doesn't have to be a daunting and expensive project if you take the time to plan it out and shop for the best deals on materials. Of course, the final cost will depend on whether you want to completely gut out the old bathroom and start with a clean slate or if you're ok with the basic room and just want to add a few elegant touches. In this article we'll touch on a few changes that will give your bathroom a fresh new look for very little time and money.

Small things matter!

Vanities: Refinishing that outdated vanity and replacing the old brass pulls with new oiled bronze, satin nickel or ceramic ones will give the vanity new life with a contemporary look. If ceramic pulls are the look you're after then avoid the decorated ones altogether. Always go with plain white, egg shell or cream ceramics for a look that's always stylish.

Old track lighting, light bars and especially flourescent lights over the vanity mirror or medicine chest can easily be replaced with modern, efficient lighting that will be more functional and energy saving.  Recessed side sconces work especially well and will add a "wow" factor every time you're in the room.

Declutter the sink area of anything that isn't used daily. Throw out the messy toothbrush cup and soap dish replacing these with wall mounted ceramic holders for a touch of class.  Organize your daily supplies like swabs and cotton balls into attractive and convenient containers. Decorative items, a candle or an aroma diffuser are fine on the vanity if space allows but limit to one or two things to keep the grooming area tidy and clean.

If the vanity top is damaged or it is dated formica or tile then consider replacing it with a new solid surface, engineered stone or granite top (Tip: If you pick granite to use for this, think about hiring a professional installer unless you are a very experienced DIYer with the proper cutting tools.). For a really contemporary look you might want to go with a new surface mounted vessel basin rather than the old drop-in sink.  The color and shape choices in glass, porcelain and synthetic vessels are vast and the look is fabulous.

After you've decided on the desired look of your new vanity then it's time to think about a new faucet. The type of faucet will depend on the kind of sink you have or plan to install. Select the size, style, type and finish that is most pleasing to your eye but always go with a quality brand such as Kohler, Moen, Kingston Brass, or American Standard. Oiled bronze finishes remain popular today giving a rich look, whereas brushed chrome and satin nickel will be popular standards for years to come.

Tub Showers: Most of us have one of these in at least one bathroom. If the tub still has its luster and is a pleasing color (as in neutral, not pink or green), a few simple things will easily bring it up to date. Replacing the old inefficient shower head with a new rain drop head will bring you new joy every time you shower.  Another great looking and very handy change is replacing the fixed shower head with a new slide-bar shower. These are available from most retailers for under $200 and they come in several types of finishes including chrome, satin nickel, and oiled bronze all of which can be matched up with the other metal fixtures you've selected for your upgrade. This type of shower combines the functionality of both fixed and hand-held showers by allowing the height adjustment to be easily reset for different sized people and the unit conveniently works as a hand-held when wanted. Both of these shower types will add comfort, pleasure and style to your shower plus save you money due to their much improved efficiency.

A simple tub shower upgrade is adding a well placed adhesive mounted soap dish. That old soap dish resting a couple of inches over the top of the tub gets blasted with water every time someone showers. The result is your soap turns to a gob of mush dripping residue down the side of the tub. Install the new soap dish in a convenient spot a few inches below and to the side of the shower head. If your tub shower walls are ceramic tile then purchase a porcelain dish (Tip: If you've never worked with tile before then a professional handyman should be hired to install the dish. If you're a DIYer but the idea of drilling and breaking out tile for your new dish makes you nervous, then  you may want to seek the advise of professionals through forums and website articles. We recommend
This Old House and The Family Handyman as excellent DIY resources.) If your tub surround is acrylic or fiberglass you can find an assortment of soap dishes which will easily glue to the surface.

It goes without saying that if your tub shower has a curtain you should replace it with a new one that blends well in color and texture with the other changes you've made. When shopping for a new curtain look for those made of bacteria and mildew resistant materials. These will last longer and help to prevent those musty shower odors.  If the enclosure is a curtain or an older glass and aluminum rail-frame type you may want to upgrade to one of the new safety glass trackless enclosures to get a completely open and unclutterred look.  These enclosures come in a swinging door or large panel type, they are very easy to keep clean and they will keep water in the tub and off the floor much better than the old type enclosures.

You don't have to break the bank upgrading your bathroom as there are ways to get it done that are quick and easy on the wallet. For a few hundred dollars you can do it yourself and have the elegant new bathroom you desire.
