Have Fun and Lose Weight -- Working Out with Your Dog
by Wayne Morrison
Would you like to get rid of some day-to-day stress and drop a few pounds in the process? If you're a dog owner there is no better way to do this than to walk or jog with your canine companion. The feeling of well-being and the pure fun you'll get by exercising with your dog will amaze you.
As we all know, there are millions of overweight and obese people primarily because of sedentary lives and over consumption, especially of fast and junk foods. Unfortunately many of these folks share their weight problems with their dogs because they feed them the wrong foods and don't exercise them, just as they do to themselves.
If you and your dog are fit and trim you'll find that working out together is not only fun, but will bond the two of you even more than you may be now. If weight issues are undeniable for you and possibly your dog, then by all means consider walking the dog once a day at the very least. Be mindful of your dog's age and general health before starting out. If the dog has any exercise limiting problems like hip dysplasia, arthritis, weak joints or cardio-respiratory conditions then a trip to the vet first is your first priority. Talk with your vet before challenging your dog with a new program and always follow his or her advice just as you would get the advise of your own doctor before starting a weight loss-exercise program.

The Top 5 Tips To Keep Your Guinea Pig Healthy
by Alison Wood, Pet Hooligans
Guinea pigs make great pets for children and adults alike. They are friendly, rarely nip, and are easy to handle. What’s more they make a delightful little squeaking sound when they are communicating with each other and with their human companions. If you do decide that you can make room for guinea pigs in your life, what then are the top tips to keep them happy and healthy:
•Guinea pigs are social animals and therefore should be kept in at least pairs, if not larger groups. Two females make a great pairing, as do two males from the same litter. A male and female kept together of course is not a good idea, as litters arrive fast and frequently with this species. It used to be recommended that rabbits and guinea pigs could be kept together, however this is now advised against, as rabbits can so easily hurt their little companions, however inadvertently, through nipping or kicking with their powerful back legs
•The guinea pig’s main diet should consist of guinea pig pellets from your local pet store, or bought online, and they should be fed twice a day, once in the morning and again in the evening. They should also be given some fresh vegetables and a little fruit every day. Guinea pigs, unlike other animals, are not able to manufacture Vitamin C, which is vital for their health. Therefore they must be given some fruits, such as an orange, which are rich in this vitamin or alternatively you can feed them supplements. Additionally of course piggies must be provided with clean fresh drinking water every day.
•Guinea pigs’ teeth grow continuously and therefore it is important that you promote good dental health, so that they do not become overgrown. Timothy hay should be provided as this helps to wear the teeth down and also wooden chews need to be available at all times. These chews can be twigs from trees that haven’t been treated with anything, or small pieces of wood that are free from chemicals
•Housing for your guinea pigs needs to be something with a solid floor, wood or plastic, and no wire as this can damage tiny paws. For each guinea pig you should be allowing at least four square feet of floor space, although the more you can provide the better, so go for the biggest cage you can afford and accommodate. All cages should be kept indoors, as guinea pigs cannot tolerate extremes of temperature, and away from direct sunlight and drafts. Piggies love to play and so please provide little tubes and covered areas where they can frolic and where they can also sleep.
•Lastly we come to perhaps one of the guinea pig’s greatest needs, and that is interaction. Hopefully they will have at least one full-time bedfellow, however they also need the care and attention of their human companions. Where possible handle and groom them from an early age or as soon as they come into your home and get them used to the sight, sound and smell of you. Little and often is better at first, and if you have children ensure that they are careful and respectful of the fact that guinea pigs have fairly fragile bones. If you can rescue a guinea pig from a shelter then all the better, but wherever they come from and whatever age they are when they arrive with you, give them love and attention and they will prove sweet and playful pets.

Dog Owner Responsibility
The bonding that occurs between a dog and his or her owner is a beautiful thing to behold. There is no other animal with which one can share his daily life so fully and with such heartfelt satisfaction. Speaking personally, I can't imagine life without a dog at my side, nor can I remember a day without a wagging tail, smiling face and slobbery licks.
Having dogs, though, is much more than all of that. It's not just about bonding with a loyal and loving companion, it's also about responsibility. Far too often people acquire young dogs without a clue on how to raise, train and care for them. We have probably all known of someone who brought a cute puppy home without understanding he would grow into a full-sized dog in just a few months. There are those people who thought they wanted a dog for a family pet but then couldn't deal with all of the ensuing teeth cutting, barking, potty messes, etc. Then, there are those people who own and raise dogs that shouldn't...they are the ones that abuse their dogs out of wreckless stupidity, meanness or profit, as in the case of Michael Vick. The sad result is millions of unwanted stray and abandoned dogs become an expensive city and county problem each year. Most of these homeless dogs die before the age of three, the result of injury, disease or euthanasia at the pound.
Providing proper treatment and care for one's dog should be mandatory in every city, county and state. Unfortunately, that isn't the case by any stretch. The truth is the U.S. is sadly lacking in laws to protect dogs, or any animals for that matter. Most of the dog laws were enacted to protect people from dogs...it should be the other way around. Please support your local ASPCA chapter, spay and neuter your pets and report animal abuse when you see it.
